The Education in a Changing Environment Conference (6th - 8th July 2011, Salford, Manchester, UK) was asking for ideas for "creative ways of presenting your research". I came up with the crazy idea of a "Tea session at 5PM" conference session. Let me explain... it's easy!
- Get some small tables for 5 or 6 persons.
- Get some tea and cookies.
- Put a native making the honors and sharing a brief introduction to the British Tea Culture.
- Every person around the table should talk for 5 minutes about a personal experience that should start as "I would like to share with you one of the best moments that I had as a teacher/learner/researcher."
- Half of the session should be devoted to drinking, eating and talking about the shared experiences.
This type of session usually takes place late night at the pub. Why couldn't we bring it to the conference program?
Why not call it 5PM - 5 Pint Manager?
5 people > 5 pints of lager > 5 stories
After somebody finishes their story all 5 have to down what's left in the pint.
Crucial problems:
- Short stories result in quick conversations and people get hammered in a flash;
- The last storyteller will possibly find it difficult to tell a coherent story and will probably ask why there are 4 pairs of twins at the table;
- Stories may be interrupted now and again for a trip to the loo;
- Stories may get to emotional after a while with comments like " I really love you guys...I never wanted to be ateacher/learner/researcher... I have always wanted to be a karaoke pro on a cruise ship".
Aside from these less positive points I truly believe that this sort of activity would brighten the dulest of conferences.
Of course this comment is just a joke. I really like Carlos' idea. Why don't we try it out this week?
As we Facebookers say, "gosto disto".
I also like Carlos' idea. Even if a little less tasty :)
